<h2>What is Lift and shift migration?</h2>
Lift and shift migration is a strategy for moving workloads to the cloud without making changes to their architecture or code. It may also be referred to as rehosting or forklift migration. The term most commonly refers to on-premise to cloud migration, however it can also refer to cloud-to-cloud migration between different providers or cloud environments. 
A lift and shift migration moves the workload as is, with minimal changes. This is in contrast to replatforming, refactoring, and rearchitecting, where varying levels of changes are made to the workload during the migration. 
Lift and shift is often appealing as it means you can start working from the cloud quickly. However, there are risks to this strategy which should be taken into account. In this insight we will examine the potential risks of lift and shift, instances where a lift and shift strategy is beneficial, and how to mitigate the risks through long-term planning and working with an expert provider. 
<h2>The potential issues with a lift and shift strategy</h2>
<h3>Missing the benefits of cloud</h3>
Cloud technology can bring significant benefits in contrast to on-premise hosting, including increased scalability, availability and performance. However, when your workloads are not architected for the cloud, or for a specific type of cloud infrastructure, you may not experience all of the benefits. With a lift and shift migration, you miss the opportunity to optimise your sites and applications, and therefore miss all of the advantages and performance improvements of cloud. 
<h3>Technical debt</h3>
In a lift and shift migration you migrate your workloads to the cloud without addressing their existing limitations. This can lead to<a href="https://www.hyve.com/insights/reducing-tech-debt-with-a-managed-cloud-solution/"> technical debt</a> &#8211; future issues arising from actions made to meet short-term goals. Technical debt is not inherently bad, but any decisions leading to technical debt should be carefully considered. If not addressed, it can lead to increased costs, decreased performance, and an increased risk of system failure. 
Just as you may choose to take on financial debt to achieve a goal, you may choose to take on technical debt to achieve a business goal. In this instance, you may choose to undertake a lift and shift migration to meet your short-term needs, knowing you will need to re-architect elements of your platform in the future.

With <a href="https://www.hyve.com/insights/what-is-cloud-native/">cloud native</a> workloads, or workloads that have been refactored and re-architected for the cloud, you can optimise your resource use. With a lift and shift migration, particularly on-premise to cloud, the workloads are not optimised for the new cloud infrastructure. This can lead to inefficiencies, with higher resource demands, and therefore higher costs. 
<h3>Security</h3>
There are security considerations that come with any platform hosted on the cloud, which are generally addressed through cloud-native security features such as encryption or identity and access management. When a platform is designed or refactored for the cloud, these considerations are taken into account. With a lift and shift, these considerations may not be addressed in the migration process, as the workload is not altered. This can lead to potential security concerns.
<h2>When to use a lift and shift strategy</h2>
While it should be approached carefully due to the potential issues listed, there are lift and shift cloud migration benefits that should not be overlooked. There are several instances where lift and shift may be appropriate. 
<h3>When speed is critical </h3>
While, in an ideal scenario, you would have plenty of time to complete your cloud migration, sometimes, time is limited. Maybe your contract with your current provider is coming to an end, or maybe it is critical for a specific project that your platform is hosted on the cloud. A lift and shift migration can typically be executed faster than a migration requiring refactoring or rearchitecting. 
<h3>For legacy systems</h3>
Legacy systems &#8211; platforms which are still in use, despite using outdated hardware or software &#8211; often limit organisations. As legacy systems rely on technology which is no longer supported, they are difficult to update. This can lead to vulnerabilities and unreliable performance. They are also often incompatible with newer technology, meaning systems within an organisation cannot communicate. However, these systems are often too complex, costly, or risky to refactor.
A lift and shift approach to migrate legacy systems to the cloud can be a useful compromise. It avoids refactoring, while bringing some of the benefits of cloud. APIs can be used to connect the legacy systems with cloud infrastructure and applications, enabling data exchange and an interface. This can greatly improve the functionality of legacy systems, and potentially improve uptime and reliability.
<h3>As a starting point for a digital transformation</h3>
In some cases, a lift and shift can be used as the initial stage of a longer-term migration strategy. If you are unable to undertake a full digital transformation straight away, you may choose a phased approach. A lift and shift migration of your existing infrastructure can be a first step in this approach, with a plan to undertake refactoring and optimisations further down the line. With this approach you start benefiting from the cloud quickly, while acknowledging and planning for the limitations of lift and shift. This can help spread costs, and avoid longer initial migration times. 
<h2>How to avoid the risks of a lift and shift strategy</h2>
If you choose a lift and shift cloud migration, there are measures you can take to avoid the potential risks and pitfalls. 
<h3>Plan your long-term strategy</h3>
To avoid the risks of technical debt and inefficiencies, you should consider the long-term strategy for your infrastructure. A lift and shift can be a useful initial stage, but, as noted, can lead to issues further down the line. If you do not plan for these issues in advance, they may cause unexpected costs for your business.
Your long-term strategy could include regular scheduled performance reviews, where you can identify opportunities for refactoring and rearchitecting elements of your platform. This will allow you to gradually optimise your workloads and experience more of the benefits of cloud. 
Alternatively, your strategy could be phased, migrating priority workloads quickly with a lift and shift strategy, and planning to refactor and re-architect other workloads in longer-term migrations. There are many ways to plan your strategy for your infrastructure, and the best option for you will depend on your specific workloads and business goals.

An experienced cloud provider can advise you of the potential issues of undertaking a lift and shift migration of your specific workloads. Your provider can ensure your migration is undertaken as safely as possible, putting plans in place to prevent security risks.

Keeping data centres cool is more than just a technical necessity &#8211; it is integral to modern business continuity. As the demand for processing power increases, so does the heat generated by servers and IT infrastructure. An estimated 40% of total energy used by data centres is for the use of data cooling (<a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/technology-media-and-telecommunications/our-insights/investing-in-the-rising-data-center-economy">McKinsey &amp; Company</a>). Without effective cooling, data centres risk costly downtimes, shortened hardware lifespans, and skyrocketing energy costs.
<h2>What is data centre cooling?</h2>
Data centre cooling refers to the systems and processes used to regulate the temperature, humidity and airflow in data centres, where large amounts of servers and other IT equipment generate significant heat. Effective cooling is essential to prevent servers from overheating, which can lead to performance degradation, hardware failure and data loss. 
Traditional cooling methods use air conditioning and chilled water systems to manage heat, while emerging solutions incorporate techniques like liquid cooling to reduce power consumption and optimise performance. Cooling is critical to maintaining the reliability, safety and efficiency of data centre operations. 
<h2>What are the different types of data centre cooling?</h2>
<h3>Liquid cooling</h3>
<h4>Immersion cooling</h4>
Immersion cooling is a relatively new and innovative approach to managing heat in data centres, where servers are fully submerged in a thermally conductive liquid (mineral oil) which absorbs and dissipates heat directly. The idea behind this method is to bypass traditional air-based cooling, eliminating the need for fans and reducing energy consumption. 
While this approach has gained attention for its potential to lower costs and increase efficiency in specific use cases, it is still seen by many as a novelty. The method presents some potential challenges, such as health, rust, corrosion and safety concerns. Once these issues are addressed, immersion cooling may break out of experimental projects and enter more widespread data centre cooling practices as future predictions suggest. 
<h4>Direct-to-chip liquid cooling</h4>
Direct-to-chip liquid cooling is an advanced method designed to target and remove heat directly from the most heat-intensive components in servers, such as CPUs, GPUs and other high-performance processing units. In this system, a network of liquid coolant-filled tubes is routed directly to the chips, where the coolant absorbs the heat and transports it away from the components. This liquid is then circulated through heat exchangers, cooling towers, or chillers, allowing it to be cooled and recirculated. 
By directly addressing these high-temperature areas, this method can significantly reduce energy consumption and improve performance of high-density data centres. Although it is complex to install and maintain, direct-to-chip liquid cooling offers scalability and efficiency, particularly for handling intensive computing workloads, such as AI and machine learning operations. 
<h4>Chilled water cooling</h4>
Chilled water cooling is a widely used method for managing heat in data centres. In this system, chilled water is circulated through pipes to air handling units or cooling coils within the data centre. As air passes over these chilled coils, it is cooled down and then distributed throughout the data centre to maintain a stable temperature, while the warm air is drawn back to be cooled again in a continuous cycle. The chilled water itself is cooled by a central chiller plant, which may be located on-site or nearby. 
This method offers precise control over temperature and humidity levels, making it highly effective for large-scale data centres which require stable and reliable cooling across a variety of equipment. One of the major benefits of chilled water cooling is its scalability. It can be easily expanded or adjusted as the data centre grows. Although it requires significant infrastructure, including chillers, pumps and cooling towers, chilled water cooling remains one of the most dependable options for cooling data centres with high workloads. 
<h3>Air cooling</h3>
<h4>Cold/hot aisle containment</h4>
Cold/Hot aisle contaminants is an airflow management strategy used in data centres to improve cooling efficiency by separating hot and cold air streams. In this method, server racks are arranged in alternating rows, with the fronts (cold aisles) of servers facing each other to take in cool air, and the backs (hot aisles) facing each other to expel warm air. Containment systems &#8211; typically panels, doors or barriers &#8211; are then installed to physically separate these aisles, preventing hot and cold air from mixing. By controlling the airflow and preventing recirculation, this approach allows cooling systems to work more efficiently, ensuring that servers receive cooler air while preventing hotspots. 
This is a simple but highly effective solution which reduces energy consumption by ensuring that cooling systems don’t have to overwork to compensate for temperature imbalances. 
<h4>Computer room air conditioning (CRAC) vs computer room air handler (CRAH)</h4>
Computer room air conditioning (CRAC) and computer room air handler (CRAH) units are traditional cooling solutions designed for data centres, providing precise temperature and humidity control. 
CRAC units operate similarly to standard air conditioners, using refrigerant-based systems to cool the air. They draw in warm air from the data centre, pass it through refrigerant-filled cooling coils and then blow the cooled air back into the room to maintain a stable temperature. CRAC units are highly effective in small to medium data centres. 
CRAH units are typically used in larger, more energy-efficient facilities. Rather than using refrigerants, CRAH systems rely on chilled water from an external chiller plant. They draw in warm air from the data centre, pass it over cooling coils filled with chilled water and circulate the cooled air back into the room. CRAH units tend to be more energy-efficient than CRAC, especially in data centres with large cooling loads, as they use external chilled water systems that can be optimised for energy savings. 
<h3>Evaporative cooling (swamp cooling)</h3>
Evaporative cooling is an energy-efficient method which uses the natural process of water evaporation to cool data centres. In this system, warm outside air is drawn through water-saturated pads or misting systems, where the water absorbs heat from the air and evaporates, lowering the temperature. The cooler, moist air is then directed into the data centre, helping to reduce the need for mechanical cooling systems like traditional air conditioning. 
This method works particularly well in regions with dry climates, where the air has a high capacity to absorb moisture and cool down. However, in more humid environments, its effectiveness can be limited due to the lower evaporation potential. 
<h3>Adiabatic cooling</h3>
Adiabatic cooling is an increasingly popular method in data centres for enhancing traditional air-based cooling systems by using the natural process of water evaporation to cool the air. It is a pre-cooling method, where the warm outside air is passed through a water-saturated medium or misted water droplets. Similarly to evaporative cooling, the air cools as the water evaporates, and this cooler air is used to assist traditional cooling methods such as CRAC or CRAH units. Adiabatic cooling is used alongside conventional systems to improve efficiency and save energy, rather than a standalone solution.

This containment strategy maximises cooling efficiency, reduces energy consumption and ensures stable performance for the critical data we store.

The importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated, with the consequences of a cyberattack including data loss, costly downtime, interruptions in service, and the loss of customer trust when these issues occur. However, when it comes to implementing security best practices to mitigate the risk of a cyberattack, it can be difficult to know where to begin. We spoke to our cloud security expert, Austin Miller, about 4 ways to protect your IT systems. 
Austin Miller is a Tier 3 IT and cloud management professional, with over 10 years experience in IT support, network security and cloud hosting, and a Bachelor of Technology in Computer and Information Systems Security/Information Assurance. 
<h2>Cloud configuration</h2>
Hackers have many ways of exploiting the vulnerabilities that exist when cloud infrastructure is incorrectly set up or maintained. Misconfiguration is often caused by cloud environments being set up by organisations’ in-house teams lacking the expertise and experience necessary to best protect their platform. When the infrastructure is also managed in-house, vulnerabilities may go unnoticed, leaving the door open for attacks. 
When deploying cloud infrastructure, Austin advises: “Look out for unrestricted inbound and outbound ports, improper management of your authentication tokens and any unsecured backups.”
If you don’t have the expertise or capacity in your in-house IT team, Austin recommends: “Working with an expert managed service provider (MSP) who will manage the configuration of your solution is one way of ensuring you have no misconfigured elements which can lead to weaknesses.”
<h2>Check for vulnerable APIs</h2>
APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are commonly used to access and extract information from cloud-based services. However, if these APIs are not configured properly, with sufficient authentication controls, they can be exploited and leak sensitive information to hackers. 
There are 3 main ways APIs can be exploited:

<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">To deliver harmful files</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">To be used as a tunnel into your network</li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">To directly collect data</li>
</ul>
Austin provides guidance on how to mitigate the risks of using APIs: “I’d recommend only using APIs that require authentication, including your APIs in your routine security scans, using a custom security gateway for your APIs and lastly, educating your employees who use APIs on the risks.”
<h2>Employee training</h2>
Attackers will always attempt to find the weakest points in your organisation’s security, and unfortunately, this can often be the staff using your systems. It is crucial that you train all staff on how to recognise and respond to the constant attacks that take place against a business. 
A significant risk for organisations is employees falling victim to phishing email attempts. While people tend to think they wouldn’t fall for a phishing attack, the figures show that email was the most common vector for malware in 2023, with 35% of malware delivered via email (<a href="https://www.verizon.com/business/resources/Tc53/reports/2023-data-breach-investigations-report-dbir.pdf">Verizon</a>). You can have a solid security suite protecting your infrastructure, but if an employee falls for a phishing attempt, an attacker could gain access to your systems and data.
We asked Austin about protecting against phishing attempts: “Make sure your team is trained to spot phishing emails &#8211; there are tell-tale signs they should be looking for in all communications. I would recommend a mandatory online training course for all new employees, with regular refreshers for existing staff. Sending dummy phishing emails to your business and monitoring clicks can be a good way to keep these threats front of mind.”
Phishing is not the only potential attack employees should be aware of &#8211; Austin continues: “Teach your employees the importance of updating their operating system and applications regularly. Stress the importance of using two-factor authentication (2FA) for virtual private networks (VPNs) and make it mandatory, this will keep out most automated attacks.”
<h2>Monitoring and prevention</h2>
Cloud monitoring is a method of observing and managing the operational workflow in cloud-based IT infrastructure. Effective monitoring can identify any potential weaknesses, often allowing you to prevent an attack before it even happens. This can be taken a step further with traffic control tools which monitor, identify and block any suspicious traffic automatically. 
Austin advises: “By using advanced monitoring tools to identify any attack, misuse or malfunction of the service, you or your cloud provider can take quick and decisive action to address any incident.”
There are many tools for monitoring your infrastructure and controlling traffic to prevent attacks; some commonly used tools are <a href="https://www.hyve.com/insights/how-ids-ips-protect-your-infrastructure/">IDS and IPS</a> (Intrusion Detection Systems and Intrusion Prevention Systems), EDR (End-point Detection and Response), and firewalls. Any of these tools can be managed in-house if you have the resources and expertise, or by a managed service provider.
