Who uses Precision Time Protocol

  • The financial sector relies on precision to track the sequence of transactions for high-frequency trading platforms
  • Gaming needs timekeeping precision for multiplayer games to ensure chronological order and prevent lip-syncing errors.
  • Media outlets need to sync audio and video feeds accurately
  • Manufacturing operations (including process automation, MRP systems, and logistics systems) have become reliant on accurate time synchronization across all systems and infrastructure to maintain seamless manufacturing processes
  • Manage enterprise applications for distributed transactional apps/DBs, accurate ordering of logs and preventing online attacks (sequence of events)

Benefits of Precision Time Protocol (PTP)

hyve-ptp-icon-high-accuracy

High accuracy

With PTP, you can enjoy accurate time stamping of up to 50 microseconds, ensuring that your applications are always precisely synchronized.

hyve-ptp-icon-high-standard

Standardisation

PTP is a widely recognized clock synchronization protocol, meaning that your system will align with a standardized timing. This can simplify system integration and reduce compatibility issues.

Peace of mind

PTP offers intensified security inside the premises, providing you with peace of mind that your sensitive data is protected.

Secure

Unlike antenna-based GPS timing infrastructure solutions, PTP can be easy to install and does not introduce security vulnerabilities.

Compliance

PTP exceeds the accuracy requirements of FINRA and MiFID II, which have SLA requirements of 100 microseconds for timestamping of applications. It also complies with the time synchronization accuracy requirements of SMPTE 2110 requirements, ensuring that you meet regulatory compliance requirements.

Precision Time Protocol (PTP) Frequently Asked Questions

The Precision Time Protocol (or PTP) is a protocol used to synchronise devices on a given network. PTP allows network devices, applications and equipment to synchronise their clocks with a high degree of accuracy to ensure the efficient running of the intended system. In the past few years, PTP has become an increasingly important tool in developing applications for specific industries and services.

PTP works by communicating and sending messages from a device (primary clock) to all other devices on a network (secondary clocks) that inform the secondary devices of what time it is at the master clock, ensuring that the secondary clocks can adjust their time to that of the master. By operating in such a method, PTP is an innately hierarchical protocol, meaning it supports multiple levels of synchronisation, allowing for a complex arrangement of network connections.

PTP can be implemented on both the hardware and software level or through a combination of the two and can act as a source of timekeeping for end systems on a given network.

In contrast to Network Time Protocol, precision time protocol allows hosts (or devices) to synchronise to one common source of time with much greater precision. Where NTP allows for precision within milliseconds, PTP allows for precision within nanoseconds.

Certifications & accreditations

When you are creating a shortlist of companies for your next cloud hosting project, it’s important to look into their compliance and accreditations.

Hyve has worked diligently to secure externally audited certifications in ISO 27001(Information Security), ISO 27017 (Cloud Security) and ISO9001 (Management systems). We have also been awarded PCI-DSS compliance, are Cyber Essentials Plus certified and are part of the government G-Cloud 13 framework, as well as a Crown Commercial supplier.

As a hosting provider that hosts some of the UK’s critical infrastructure, we comply fully with the NIS Regulation 2018, which was formulated by the NCSC (part of GCHQ) to boost the overall level of security (both cyber and physical) of network and digital information systems.
