What is bring your own cloud (BYOC) and how does it work?

Bring your own cloud (BYOC) is a management model that allows you to take your own cloud environment, and add third-party cloud management services. BYOC is most commonly associated with public cloud, but can also refer to bringing an existing private cloud or hybrid environment under third-party management.

The provider connects to your cloud, using tools such as VPNs, private endpoints, and encryption to ensure a secure link. They can then manage the aspects of your environment that you choose. This can include configuration, updates, maintenance, monitoring, scaling and optimization.

BYOC typically uses a shared responsibility model. You are responsible for the core infrastructure, account-level security, and access controls, and compliance requirements. The third-party provider is responsible for the functionality and operational layers, such as workload availability, performance, patching, cost optimization, and incident response, depending on the agreed level of service.

There are variations in the BYOC model, with different types of environment and levels of management available depending on your needs. Some organizations may only need support with monitoring and cost optimization, while others might require full hands-on management. BYOC offerings can also be tailored to specific industry requirements, compliance requirements, or use cases.

Is a BYOC management model the right choice for you?

BYOC is one of many cloud deployment and management models available. There are several reasons you may consider a BYOC deployment:

  • Expert management – Deploying, running and managing workloads in the cloud can be complex. If your team lacks the in-house resources or expertise to manage cloud infrastructure effectively, BYOC gives you access to an experienced provider who can ensure your environment is configured, secured, and optimized for performance.
  • Simplified infrastructure – If you are already hosting workloads on your own cloud environment, you may prefer to deploy new workloads within the same platform. This helps maintain consistency and simplify access. With BYOC, you gain support from an expert provider, without needing to migrate to a new platform.
  • Control – With a BYOC approach, you maintain control over the core infrastructure, account-level security, and access controls.
  • Integration with existing tools – If you already use cloud-native services like IAM policies, monitoring dashboards, or automation scripts, a BYOC model can fit into your current workflows.

Risks and challenges of BYOC

While BYOC can be a fit for organizations already using cloud infrastructure (but needing additional management support), it may not offer the same performance, security, or cost predictability as deploying in a dedicated environment. It is important to weigh the potential challenges before committing to this model.

  • Cloud concentration risk – A BYOC approach can lead to cloud concentration risk, where you become overly reliant on a single cloud platform. When all of your workloads are hosted within one cloud environment, any incident can endanger your operation. Hosting workloads in different environments, or with different providers, can mitigate this.
  • Security gaps – If not correctly configured, BYOC setups can expose gaps such as unmanaged accounts, lack of enforced policies, or missing IAM/multi‑factor controls. If you choose the BYOC model, it is vital to choose a provider who can support secure configuration.

How our management supports a BYOC model

Our public cloud management supports a bring your own cloud approach, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of public cloud, with expert monitoring and management tailored to your needs. You stay in control of your chosen platform while we take care of the day-to-day complexity.

Whether you are hosting your workloads with Azure, AWS, or any other public cloud provider, our experts provide platform-agnostic management to support and maintain your platform. Our team works directly within your environment, using secure tools and best practices to manage your workloads efficiently. Our public cloud management includes 24/7/365 support, proactive cost optimization, and managed security.

If you are already on private or hybrid cloud infrastructure, and aren’t looking to migrate, we can additionally support a BYOC approach, providing management services to meet your requirements.

We offer tailored solutions, and configure your cloud environment to meet your exact needs, with various levels of management available.

With our support, you can rapidly deploy new workloads, scale resources, and optimize your platform to maximize your cloud environment.
