Protecting your business

Data security is essential for all businesses, regardless of their size. Every company relies on data and needs to store it securely, which has led to an increased reliance on data and the emergence of potential security risks.

Data breaches and DDoS attacks are now a common occurrence for businesses, with their consequences ranging from unexpected and prolonged downtime to legal fees. It is crucial for businesses to invest in data security to protect them against any threat to their business operations or brand reputation.

DDoS Defence System
A distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack is when a hacker attempts to make an online service, website or application unavailable by overloading it with web traffic from multiple source IPs. The consequences of downtime caused by a DDoS attack range from brand damage, to significant financial loss.

In 2016, Dyn was hit by a major DDoS attack, disrupting many major sites such as Airbnb, Netflix, PayPal, Visa, Amazon and The New York Times. Dyn was able to resolve the attack within one day, however, the financial loss that can occur over a day is significant. Amazon, for example, estimated in 2008 that it would lose approximately £2,300 for every minute of downtime, which would be a significantly larger sum today, due to their rapid expansion in recent years.

Hyve offers a DDoS Defence System to protect customers against DDoS attacks. Our DDoS Defence System ensures total business continuity through the following four steps:

  • Detecting the DDoS attack
  • Diverting the traffic destined for the target device to an Arbor Networks appliance for treatment
  • Analysing and filtering the bad traffic from the good traffic preventing malicious traffic from impacting performance while continuing to allow legitimate transactions to take place
  • Forwarding the good traffic, maintaining business continuity

IPS
Hyve also offers an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS), which is a security appliance that inspects network traffic and identifies malicious, harmful, and/or unwanted network activity and blocks it.

Cybercrime attacks are now listed as the FBI’s third highest priority. Through these attacks, criminals can obtain banking credentials and clean out bank accounts for tens, often hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is, therefore, crucial to monitor website traffic/activity and block anything potentially harmful.

IPS works by learning a set of rules and applying these rules in real time to the traffic attempting to reach a website. For example, an IPS can be used to block SQL injections. Attackers can use SQL injections to hack into a database and impersonate other users in the database with administrative privileges. This would allow the hacker to access all the information stored in the database and modify, copy or delete it. An IPS would learn when a SQL injection was attempting to penetrate the system, and block it.
