Aliases/Forwarding

An email alias is an email account that simply forwards to another POP3 account. An alias does not have its own storage on the mail server. Hyve offer unlimited email aliases and forwarding accounts.

Anti-Spam & Rules

This is a system designed to filter unsolicited spam emails from being delivered to your inbox. Rules allow you to customize the way in which emails are delivered to your inbox or sub folders.

Anti-Virus

Antivirus (or “anti-virus”) software is a class of program that searches your hard drive and floppy disks for any known or potential viruses. The market for this kind of program has expanded because of Internet growth and the increasing use of the Internet by businesses concerned about protecting their computer assets.

Apache Web server

Apache is a powerful, highly configurable and HTTP/1.1 compliant web server. The advantage of Apache over its competitors is that it will run on almost any platform, plus the source code can be downloaded for free!!

ASP Upload

This is an award winning software component that is quickly becoming the industry standard. Many hosting companies such as Hyve offer the product as a means to upload site related files to the server via standard HTTP, rather then FTP.

ASP/ASPX

ASP stands for Active Server Page. This can basically be thought of as an html page, which also includes embedded scripts that run on a Microsoft based web server. Before the page is sent back to the client it is dynamically built, based on inputs from other resources, such as a database.

ASPX is a .net version of an Active Server Page.

Auto-responders

An email system allowing users to set an automated response to any inbound emails.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth, also referred to as digital bandwidth or network bandwidth is a measure of available or consumed data communication resources expressed in bit/s or multiples of it (kbit/s, Mbit/s etc). In layman’s terms, it describes how much data can pass down the line in a specific amount of time.

Catchall Accounts

Catch all email accounts are used to deliver “any-email-address”@yourdomain.com to a specified inbox. This can be very useful if your clients are unsure of your email address. What ever alias they use @youdomain.com will get to you.

CGI Bin

CGI stands for Common Gateway Interface. It is the method or interface used by a web server to send an online request (or form filled out by a user) to a server side program for processing. Data is then received back from that program, and usually forwarded back to the user.

Chassis

A chassis (pronounced TCHA-see or CHA-see) is the physical frame or structure of an automobile, an airplane, a desktop computer, or other multi-component device. Case is very similar in meaning, but tends to connote the protective aspect of the frame rather than its structure.

In a computer, the chassis houses the main electronic components, including the motherboard and places for adding optional components or adaptors.

Classpath Modification

Modify the locations of your Java class paths. This allows the developer to control the class files that get loaded into the web application.

In object-oriented programming, a class is a template definition of the methods and variables in a particular kind of object. Thus, an object is a specific instance of a class; it contains real values instead of variables

ColdFusion

This is a server application package developed by Allaire. Templates can be used with this product to build content databases which can then be combined with application programs to create dynamically built web pages and sites.

COM+

COM+ is an extension of COM or Component Object Model, which is Microsoft’s strategic building block approach for developing application programs. It includes a set of operating system services, and an object oriented programming architecture.

It can also be used to manage application and database transaction requests, security, connection to other servers, and transaction integrity, on behalf of a client computer, which may not have the necessary authority.

Connection Speed

One of the most important aspect of our business, running on an OC-192 nationwide backbone (that’s 10 Gigabits per second), we continually invest in state-of-the-art technology, to ensure your website is as fast as it possibly can be.

Custom Error Documents

These are pages that can be displayed instead of the standard server error pages. For example, instead of the standard “HTTP Error 404 – File or directory not found” error page, a friendly page can be displayed that explains to the web user that the page they are looking for cannot be found. This page can be designed to look like a standard website page.

Data Transfer/Month

This is a measure of the total amount of data transferred over a monthly period. Bandwidth is a measure of how much data is permitted to travel along a pipe at any one time. It is commonly confused with data transfer. Due to our extensive connectivity, we are able to offer highly competitive monthly data transfer to our clients.

Dedicated IIS Application Pool

IIS Application Pool contains all web applications on domains hosted on your server. Dedicated IIS application pool allows you to have a level of isolation between web applications used by their domains. Since each dedicated application pool runs independently, errors in one application pool belonging to one client will not affect the applications running in other application pools belonging to other clients.

Dedicated IP

A dedicated IP address means that your site is the only one on the internet using that unique IP number. Most large scale websites and ecommerce applications have a dedicated IP address. There are many advantages to having a dedicated IP address, for example, sites using shared IPs can be affected by the activities of other sites sharing their IP such as those being blacklisted for sending spam or creating online scams.

Disk Contoller

A chip and associated circuitry that is responsible for controlling a disk drive. There are different controllers for different interfaces. For example, an IDE interface requires an IDE controller and a SCSI interface requires a SCSI controller.

Disk Space

Disk space refers to the amount of storage allocated to each website. Each hosting plan has a different disk space allocation limit.

Regardless of the fact that Hyve only invests in the very best hardware available, we are able to offer very competitive disk space allowances on each of our price plans.

Domain Alias

A domain alias is the first part of a domain name.
For example: alias.domain.com

Domain Name

Hyve can register the domain name of your choice for a very competitive price. Take a look at our Domain Names section under Order Online.

Alternatively, we will provide you with a free domain alias (or sub domain), from our range of existing specialist domains.

For example:
• yourdomain.hyve.com
• yourdomain.hyve.cc

Email Anti-Virus

This is an antivirus system for all in and outbound emails.
See glossary Anti-Virus for a full description.

Firewall Protection

A system designed to prevent unauthorized access to or from a private network. Firewalls can be implemented in both hardware and software, or a combination of both. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing private networks connected to the Internet, especially intranets. All messages entering or leaving the intranet pass through the firewall, which examines each message and blocks those that do not meet the specified security criteria.
Hyve use a variety of high spec hardware firewall solutions for all of our clients.

Flash/Shockwave

A bandwidth friendly and browser independent vector-graphic animation technology. As long as different browsers are equipped with the necessary plug-ins, Flash animations will look the same. With Flash, users can draw their own animations or import other vector-based images.

A technology developed by Macromedia, Inc. that enables Web pages to include multimedia objects. To create a shockwave object, you use Macromedia’s multimedia authoring tool called Director, and then compress the object with a program called Afterburner. You then insert a reference to the “shocked” file in your Web page. To see a Shockwave object, you need the Shockwave plug-in, a program that integrates seamlessly with your Web browser. The plug-in is freely available from Macromedia’s Web site as either a Netscape Navigator plug-in or an ActiveX control.

Front Page Extensions

Microsoft FrontPage, a registered trademark of Microsoft Corporation. A software program to create and manage Web pages. The FrontPage extension is the server side component, used to allow the FrontPage client software to interact with the server.

FTP

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It was specifically developed to allow reliable and fast upload and download of files to and from your remote webserver.

FTP Uploading

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to upload and download files to and from your website. Using an FTP application such as FileZilla or CuteFTP, you can change and update what people see when they visit your website.

FTP/ASP Uploading

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. HTTP for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Hyve offer its clients the ability to upload web site related files through either protocol. This is purely for convenience, as some firewalls prohibit the use of FTP for data transfer.
ASP Uploading utilises the HTTP protocol via ASP code.
This is an award winning software component that has become the industry standard. Many hosting companies offer the product as a means to upload site related files to the server via standard HTTP, rather then FTP.

IMAP4 Support

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. It is a method of accessing electronic mail or bulletin board messages that are kept on a (possibly shared) mail server. In other words, it permits a “client” email program to access remote message stores as if they were local. For example, email stored on an IMAP server can be manipulated from a desktop computer at home, a workstation at the office, and a notebook computer while travelling, without the need to transfer messages or files back and forth between these computers.

Learn more at www.imap.org.

Intrusion Detection

An intrusion detection system (IDS) inspects all inbound and outbound network activity and identifies suspicious patterns that may indicate a network or system attack from someone attempting to break into or compromise a system.

IP Address

IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is basically a unique identifier, containing a 32-binary digit number that identifies every sender and receiver of information sent in packets across the Internet.

Whenever a user requests a web page, or even sends an email, the IP address for that resource or receiver will be looked up and used. With some of our price plans you get your very own Static IP Address, which is unique to your site and will not change.

We allow the additions of personally defined MIME types to your website, so that the server can serve per-defined non-standard content to the client browser.

PHP

In Web programming, PHP is a script language and interpreter that is freely available and used primarily on Linux Web servers. PHP, originally derived from Personal Home Page Tools, now stands for PHP: Hypertext Preprocessor, which the PHP FAQ describes as a “recursive acronym.”

PHP is an alternative to Microsoft’s Active Server Page (ASP) technology. As with ASP, the PHP script is embedded within a Web page along with its HTML. Before the page is sent to a user that has requested it, the Web server calls PHP to interpret and perform the operations called for in the PHP script.

An HTML page that includes a PHP script is typically given a file name suffix of “.php” “.php3,” or “.phtml”. Like ASP, PHP can be thought of as “dynamic HTML pages,” since content will vary based on the results of interpreting the script.

All Hyve servers come with a PHP interpreter pre-installed and ready for use.

POP3 Email Accounts

POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) is the most recent version of a standard protocol for receiving e-mail. POP3 is a client/server protocol in which e-mail is received and held for you by your Internet server. Periodically, you (or your client e-mail receiver) check your mail-box on the server and download any mail, probably using POP3. This standard protocol is built into most popular e-mail products, such as Eudora and Outlook Express. It’s also built into the Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer browsers.
POP3 is designed to delete mail on the server as soon as the user has downloaded it. However, some implementations allow users or an administrator to specify that mail be saved for some period of time. POP can be thought of as a “store-and-forward” service.

Priority Level

Hyve have 3 Priority Levels as follows:

Priority Level 1
The highest support priority. This is used when an issue is deemed CRITICAL. One of our engineers will begin trouble shooting immediately. Any support request received with this level without valid reason will be re-submitted on a lower Priority Level, and the customer will be notified. Please use this level wisely.

Priority Level 2
This is regarded as an extremely urgent issue, which will take preference over all other issues in Priority Level 3. This will typically be actioned within the hour, and must be affecting a live site/mail solution etc. (website must be out of the development phase to qualify).

Priority Level 3
Used for general support issues and should be used for most requests regarding configuration of services/websites etc., as well as development issues such as problems with a database connection string etc. Priority Level 3 is treated as a high priority issue, and will usually be rectified within 24hours. Unless you are experiencing a disruption in service or website please use this Level.

Stands for Secure Shell. This is a UNIX based protocol and command interface used for getting secure access to a remote computer.

SSL

Stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a protocol commonly used for managing security and encrypting message transmission across the Internet. It uses a program layer located between HTTP and TCP layers.

Many web sites use this protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https instead of http.

SSL – Dedicated

Stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a protocol commonly used for managing security and encrypting message transmission across the Internet. It uses a program layer located between HTTP and TCP layers.

Many web sites use this protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https instead of http.

With dedicated SSL you must purchase your own SSL certificate and have a dedicated IP address to run the SSL on. With dedicated SSL you get a secure URL lke https://secure.yourname.com/ and our name is not included in the url. Dedicated SSL is more costly because Dedicated SSL requires that you purchase an SSL certificate and have a dedicated IP address.

SSL – Shared

Stands for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a protocol commonly used for managing security and encrypting message transmission across the Internet. It uses a program layer located between HTTP and TCP layers.

Many web sites use this protocol to obtain confidential user information, such as credit card numbers. By convention, URLs that require an SSL connection start with https instead of http.

With shared SSL you get the benefits of SSL without the additional costs. with Shared SSL you can use our SSL certificate. Some problems can be encountered with session variables when using shared SSL.

All of our servers come with a suite of software based on your requirements.

Static IP

When a computer is configured to use the same IP address each time it powers up, this is known as a Static IP address. IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a unique identifier, containing a 32-binary digit number that identifies every sender and receiver of information sent in packets across the Internet.

Whenever a user requests a web page, or even sends an email, the IP address for that resource or receiver will be looked up and used. With some of our price plans you get your very own Static IP Address, which is unique to your site and will not change.

Traffic Statistics

Traffic statistics are generated from log files from the web server and based on the values contained in the log file, they provide information about who, when, and how a web server is visited. Usually reports are generated from the log files immediately, but the log files can alternatively be parsed to a database and reports generated on demand.

Storage

All of our servers come with high quality hard drives. We carry many spares of all drives supplied, so in the event of a failure, we can simply hot swap the drive out for another.

Your choice of SCSI or IDE. Depending on your budget, we have drives to suit your needs. The SCSI option is best suited to sites requiring full data/drive redundancy, and the use of RAID controllers.

Streaming Media

The idea behind streaming media is the ability to view a selected media file before the entire file is downloaded. The file might be large in size, however, the end user can start viewing it once a few seconds of video are downloaded.

This greatly improves media performance especially when viewing larger files.

Sub Domains

Typically known as a “domain within a domain”, subdomains are individual web addresses built upon a pre-existing domain name (such as subdomain.yourdomain.com).

Described as a “reference implementation” of the Java Servlet and the Java Server Page specifications, Tomcat is the result of an open collaboration of developers that is available from the Apache Web site in both binary and source versions.

UPS

An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) is a device that allows your computer to keep running for at least a short time when the primary power source is lost. It also provides protection from power surges. A UPS contains a battery that “kicks in” when the device senses a loss of power from the primary source. If you are using the computer when the UPS notifies you of the power loss, you have time to save any data you are working on and exit gracefully before the secondary power source (the battery) runs out. When all power runs out, any data in your computer’s random access memory (RAM) is erased. When power surges occur, a UPS intercepts the surge so that it doesn’t damage your computer.

WAP/WML Support

Short for the Wireless Application Protocol, a secure specification that allows users to access information instantly via handheld wireless devices such as mobile phones, pagers, two-way radios, smartphones and communicators.

Short for Wireless Markup Language, an XML language used to specify content and user interface for WAP devices; the WAP forum provides a DTD for WML.
