The following information summarises the key features and benefits of using The Hyve Cloud and compares some of these features with traditional dedicated servers. We offer truly enterprise-grade cloud hosting – superior to most other public cloud offerings currently available.

The following information is divided into 4 key areas:

Performance
Disk Technology Super-fast Fibre Channel disk technology rather than SATA or SAS
Disk Connection Disks connected via multiple fibre optic cables (instead of a single serial cable found in stand alone servers)
Disk Controllers Dedicated multiple disk controllers rather than built-in controllers
Number of Disks Up to 96x Fibre Channel disks per enclosure, serving data in parallel
Hardware Purpose-built genuine HP cloud hardware (Blade servers)
CPU Each Blade is equipped with up to 4x i7 six-core CPU. CPUs are constantly upgraded to the most recent models
RAM Each Blade is equipped with up to 192GB
Network Dedicated 1GbE with NSPOF (No Single Point of Failure)
Bandwidth Multiple active 1GbE internet uplinks, all fully burstable to a maximum capacity of 4GbE
Load Sharing LS technology enables each Blade to utilise another Blade’s CPU resources if permitted. This is purely for traffic peaks and spikes. LS is only activated if requested and will not affect other Blades because it will only utilise resources from Blades that are underutilised
Redundancy (reliability)
Disks Connection Each Blade has at least 4x fibre optic links to disks via 2x independent fibre controllers on separate power grids. Both controllers operating in active/active mode. This is compared to a single serial interconnect to disks as with traditional stand alone servers
Disk Controllers 2x dedicated disk controllers per array instead of single SCSI controller on stand alone servers (which also adds load to the server CPU)
Power Each Blade has access to any one of 6x separate power supplies per enclosure (3 per independent power grid) as opposed to a single PSU found in traditional servers
Cooling Blade servers benefi t from multiple shared enclosure fans. If one fan fails, the others increase RPM to offset the loss. This is a single point of failure with stand alone servers and also serves to reduce power consumption for a greener platform
Bandwidth Blade enclosures are equipped with 4x 1GbE internet uplinks for redundancy and capacity (not a single NIC as with stand alone servers)
High Availability Blades operate in HA mode (High Availability), so virtual machines can instantly migrate between Blades in the unlikely event of a hardware failure.
Stand alone servers would simply fail
Security Multiple Cisco firewalls operating in HA mode. If one fails, another will take over instantly.
Scalability
Resource Upgrades Using HA technology, cloud resources can be upgraded seamlessly in the background with no client downtime. We can migrate running virtual machines
from a Blade which requires maintenance or upgrading with no impact to client services
Elastic Resources Client virtual machines can be rapidly upgraded and downgraded at any time as required to suit client budget and/or load such as traffic spikes
Load Sharing As well as being a benefit to performance, LS technology allows us to upgrade our cloud rapidly with no downtime for clients as required

VMware provides the power and flexibility that enables us to assign and manage cloud resources and dynamically scale hosting solutions in order to meet specific demands. The Hyve Cloud is configured so that each server has full access to the cloud’s resources and is not throttled or restricted in any way, regardless of the activities of other servers on the platform. Powerful VMware features such as High Availability, vMotion and DRS allow us to maintain exceptional levels of control and availability.

HP Blade Servers – Custom-designed for the Cloud

At the heart of The Hyve Cloud lies genuine HP Blade server technology. HP Blades are purpose-built hardware servers that deliver enormous processing power. Custom-designed to excel under the heavy demand conditions of mission-critical cloud computing, they are mounted vertically within custom-built enclosures which allows for more units to fit into a smaller amount of data centre space. Up to 16 Blade servers can be housed within each enclosure resulting in significant energy savings.

Fibre Channel Disks – Light Speed Performance

A vital factor contributing to the high performance of The Hyve Cloud are the Fibre Channel disks used in our storage arrays. Fibre Channel or FC disks offer the best performance of all disk technology available today. Each FC disk is equipped with a cache which intelligently reads and writes at optimum times. Fibre Channel disks are ideal for for high transaction systems and completely eliminate read/write bottleneck issues found in inferior cloud and VPS systems. Connected to the Blade servers using fibre optic cables, each cloud server is able to write to up to 96 FC disks simultaneously providing significant performance advantages.
